fiscal cliff, sending everybody's taxes up and possibly sending the country into another recession. it's down to the wire with just three days left. and abc's lisa stark has the latest on the last-minute wheeling and dealing being done in washington. good morning, lisa. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. well, the next 24 hours are critical. the president this morning in his radio address, told lawmakers don't let washington politics get in the way of american progress. so, the last-ditch attempt is on the way to put together a deal. and the ball is in the senate's court. there's nothing like a deadline to force action. the president met with congressional leaders friday for the first time in six weeks. then, proclaimed himself modestly optimistic. but warned -- >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously, their patience is already thin. >> reporter: with the clock running out, here's the game plan. the democratic and republican leaders in the senate will spend day trying to hash out a bipartisan agreement. >> i'm hopeful and optimistic. >> reporter: but if there is no deal, the president wants an up or down vote on measures he thinks can pass. extending tax cuts for those making $250,000 or

, bianna and dan. good morning, everyone. we begin with that fiscal cliff hanger in washington, d.c. there are now just two days left until automatic tax hikes and severe budget cuts go into effect. president obama is urging democrats and republicans to reach a deal. senate leaders are working on a last-minute compromise. that could be voted on tomorrow. >>> a horrific accident in mississippi. six people including five children were killed when their suv plunged into a creek yesterday. the children were all related. police say four other adults including the parents of those children managed to escape the cause of that accident is under investigation. >>> and stunning video of a plane crash outside of moscow, russia, the passenger plane overshot the runway and slammed into a highway yesterday. amazing video. four of the eight crew members on board were killed. there were no passengers on the plane and no one on the highway was hurt. the cause of that crash is under investigation. >>> and finally, a celebration at the vatican. about 40,000 young pilgrims from all across europe attended an open air mass conducted by pope benedict. they cheered as the pope waved to the crowd from his popemobile and the crowd gathered in st. peter's square as part of a missi

to keep your taxes from going up and avoid that so-called fiscal cliff in washington. president obama has called the top congressional leaders to the white house this afternoon, for the first talks in more than a month. but hope for a new deal is fading. just yesterday, the senate majority leader is accusing the speaker of running a dictatorship if there's no deal within four days. just about every american will see their taxes go on up. >>> and this morning, more snow is threatening to make holiday travel difficult for millions of americans. as sam has been telling us, snow is falling across the upper midwest and will be moving into the northeast tomorrow. meantime, the recovery from the last storm is just beginning. 135,000 homes and businesses still without power in arkansas alone. many of them could be in the dark through next week. >>> and this morning, russian president vladimir putin has signed a highly controversial bill which bans americans from adopting russian children. dozens of pending adoptions now frozen, even cases where children -- this is heartbreaking -- were just days away from moving to the united states. russia banned the adoptions in retaliation for a new u.s. law that sanctions russian officials accused

reached an agreement to reverse the fiscal cliff. abc's jonathan karl reports on the details from washington. >> reporter: at long last, they finally have a deal. late last night, vice president biden went to capitol hill to convince senate democrats to pass it. >> i think we'll get a very good vote tonight, but happy new year. >> reporter: after a quick debate, the senate even passed it. >> the bill as amended is passed. >> reporter: now the big question, can it pass in the house? technically everybody's taxes have already gone up. the tax cuts have expired. but if the bill can pass in the house in the next day or two, the tax cuts can be made retroactive. the bill, if it passes, would extend tax cuts for all workers earning under $400,000. it would prevent a big tax hike estates values at less than $5 million and it would extend unemployment benefits set to expire today for some 2 million people. even as they closed in on that deal yesterday, congressional republicans were not happy with what they heard from president obama who held a campaign-style event at the white house. >> i'm going to be president for the next four years, i think. >> reporte

can try once again to negotiate a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff by the end of the year. just about every american family will see their taxes increase on january 1 unless a deal is reached. but lawmakers are expressing very little optimism so far. meantime, the president spent christmas in hawaii, visiting a local marine base, thanking more than 100 troops and their families for their service. >>> and this morning, the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing at a major u.s. base in eastern afghanistan. three afghans, including a guard at camp chatman were killed in today's explosion. >>> and back here at home, former major league baseball player andruw jones is free on bond this morning. he was arrested near atlanta early christmas morning on a battery charge, after police responded to a call about a domestic dispute with his wife. >>> and netflix, they are apologizing for a christmas outage in its video streaming service. yes, it happened on christmas, a little untimely. it took ten hours to resolve the problem, which affected subscribers across the country. the company says it stemmed from a failure at amazon, which hosts the netflix servers.
